SIDEXIS XG – proven X-ray software for your diagnoses.

SIDEXIS XG, the previous version to SIDEXIS 4, not only enables you to capture, analyze, process, and import/export images. You can also use it to store all of the image material from Sirona imaging systems. SIDEXIS XG can be integrated into a wide variety of dental practice environments and can exchange images and patient data with all widely used dental practice administration systems.

Highly integrated, plus extensive functions

Many management systems use the Sirona interface and provide automatic data transfer and retrieval with SIDEXIS XG. With the SLIDA interface or the optional SIDICOM WLS, you can automate and accelerate practice processes..

SIDEXIS XG was developed to meet the needs of dental image processing. It provides many functions and details that support the typical processes in a dental practice. Easy to understand and intuitively arranged, the commonly used functions can be activated by key combinations. SIDEXIS XG also makes it possible to optimize processes by defining acquisition schemes. Thanks to an automated, individually configurable filter, users save (clicking) work and time, arriving at a diagnosis more quickly. Tools for measuring length, angles, and density – and free overlays as well – have also been integrated. In addition, plugins let you expand the range of features of SIDEXIS XG.

You can use SIDEXIS XG as a software platform for the digital X-ray units from Sirona and also have the option of connecting additional units – such as GALILEOS, ORTHOPHOS and XIOS.

Video for Windows

The "Video for Windows Standard" can be used as an interface between SIDEXIS XG and common Framegrabber cards. All intraoral cameras, regardless of origin, which can be connected to a "Video for Windows"-compatible Framegrabber card, are compatible with SIDEXIS XG. This means even more flexibility when choosing hardware.

TWAIN

Use the Twain interface to connect all your digital imaging equipment, such as a scanner or digital camera. SIDEXIS XG will identify them and add their images into the database. That means the digital photos will always be at your fingertips to assist with orthodontics or for your dental practice administration program. Do you have a colleague who works with film-based x-ray units? Just scan his picture in and you will be able to analyze and edit it digitally.

Usage

  1. To install a new program, ODBC drivers are necessary. Does this effect the operation of SIDEXIS?
We base our system for ODBC drivers on the Microsoft standard and its downwards compatibility as specified. That means no problems are to be expected when installing newer versions.
  2. What is the SLIDA- interface?
The Term SLIDA comes from SIDEXIS Link to Dental Applications. It stands for the build in possibility to connect SIDEXIS to other programs. A SLIDA interface must of course be programmed in the partner's Data Source. There are different, valuable, functional steps included. Therefore we recommend software developers to download the SLIDA-documentation from this website.
  3. I have assigned an images to the wrong patient - how I can correct this?
The images, can be reassigned correctly as follows:
    1. Open Patient image data, and export the image to a folder on the hard drive
    2. In the image description dialogue, mark the image as " non diagnosable "
    3. Log off Patient and choose the correct patient.
    4. Import the image from the hard drive.
    5. Finally delete the wrong image on hard drive with e.g. Windows Explorer
  4. Can I deactivate the start screen in SIDEXIS XG?
Close SIDEXIS, access the SIDEXIS folder with the Explorer, look for SIDEXIS .ini. Open the file and enter after the line:
    [Config]
    starttime=0.
Save the file. Next time SIDEXIS will start up directly.
  5. On my print outs, the name of the operator is not always complete?
SIDEXIS 5.x allows at present a max. length of 11 characters for the dentists name. This is limited through compatibility requirements with older than 5.x SIDEXIS data bases.
  6. What are the differences between backup and Relocation in SIDEXIS XG?
Regular Backups enable you to restore a corrupted or damaged database to the date of the backup. Backups done on a regular base -even if they are somewhat time consuming- secure the restart of your system after e.g. a hard drive problem.
Relocation in the opposite, removes the patient image data from the hard drive to another PC or portable storage media. The A Drive does not qualify as a storage option. The storage size is to small. The relocation data does however not serve as a functional backup. For later recognition of the relocated images a thumbnail image with image number will remain on the original hard drive.
The main advantage of relocation is the PC independent possibility to safely store the data over an extended period of years. The lifetime of MO discs is guaranteed to approx. 30 years.
Backups on Tape are significantly more sensitive comparable to exterior influences and guaranteed lifetime is approx. 10 years.
Sirona does recommend regular backups and control of the age and wear and tear of the storage media.
  7. I would like to log the exposure data from digital Intra Oral images automatically in X-Ray control book?
Unfortunately not, the exposure settings of the X-Ray unit for IO images cannot be taken over automatically in the software, because the X-Ray device is not connected with the PC.
  8. It´s possible to operate a video camera via USB in SIDEXIS?
The function depends on the type of drivers are supported (USB drivers and camera drivers). Likely is either VfW or TWAIN. Both can be operated by SIDEXIS - but the compatibility has to be checked locally in your system.
  9. I would like to measure lengths with SIDEXIS in horizontal direction with help of the ORTHOPHOS PROGRAM 11. However, I get no correct information in spite of calibration.
In the horizontal by using the panorama-layer radiogram you cannot determine enlargement factors. The reason is based on the fact that the layer curve or the layer position is determined by the speed of the film or the choice of selection peed of sensor.
It depends on the fact that the speed of the central ray corresponds, in the object to be taken of the layer middle, to the speed of selection. This is calculated by a rather complex formula, because the movement of rotation is overlaid by the relative movement of the rotation centre. The objects in the front tooth area are shown in horizontal direction a little bit "bawled out".
  10. For second opinion, I have received an image via email. How can I find out, whether it was already enhanced?
Images transmitted from SIDEXIS will show the image as sent. The results of filters applied will be shown. If the sender uses the SIDEXIS tif or tif. compressed format however, you can open the original image before enhancement. Other image formats cannot be reset to original settings.

SIDEXIS XG Installation

  1. Which operating systems can be used with SIDEXIS XG?
The recommended system requirements are depending on the used SIDEXIS XG version. You will find the requirements on the installation CD booklet as well as in the readme.txt which is located on the installation CD.
  2. What should be kept in mind in connection with virus scanners and other programs?
Many virus scanners impair the functionality of the installation. It is therefore advisable to terminate or deactivate all programs before beginning the installation. The virus scanner should then be reactivated following the installation.
  3. System error messages appear when the CD setup program autorun.exe is started. What is the reason for this?
If the CD setup program is started on an outdated or unsupported operating system, the operating system will display the following errors: “A device connected to the system is not functioning“, “The AUTORUN.EXE file is linked to the missing export ADVAPI32.DLL: CheckTokenMembership“.
  4. When does a local installation of SIDEXIS XG make sense?
Local installation is advisable for computers not equipped with a network connection. This type of installation is also practical for demonstration purposes.
  5. What are the advantages of a central installation?
The installation work/costs for SIDEXIS XG can be minimized with a central installation. First a master installation is performed at one station. All installation files are copied to the central setup directory, which is located under the image data directory (PDATA). Then, to install the software on all other stations, start each individual SIDEXIS client installation from the central setup directory. The client installation will then be performed as specified by the master installation without any further user interaction.
  6. What should be observed when performing a central installation?
A central installation must be started from the SIDEXIS XG CD. The master station should have internet access if automated updates are to be downloaded and executed.
  7. Why is a correctly installed SQL server not displayed during the setup of central installation?
In some Network environments It is possible that some of the SQL servers will not be displayed. This is network-related and depends on the used protocols as well as firewalls configurations that have been set. In this case, the SQL server instance to be used should be entered manually during the SIDEXIS setup. The name of the instance must have the following syntax: \PDATA_SQLEXPRESS, e.g. MyServer\PDATA_SQLEXPRESS.

  8. How can a station become the master station retroactively?
With the help of the tool NGStationManager an existing SIDEXIS Station can be easily become the Master Station. Highlight the Station which should be the Master, select CHANGE; at the following Window check  “Use as master station”
    (Start-> Programme-> SIDEXIS->SIDEXIS Manager-> NGStationMgr)
  9. Is it necessary to manually create permissions for PDATA  for the image data directory before executing the SIDEXIS setup?
Permissions for the image data directory named “PDATA“ and full access for all users are automatically configured during the central installation, given that this directory is located on the master station. If the PDATA is not located at the master station, permissions (with read and write access) must be configured manually for SIDEXIS users. No manual permission configuration is required for PDATA when performing a local installation of SIDEXIS. If an existing database is being connected, manual permission configuration for PDATA is required in this case.
The following generally applies: The PDATA permission configuration (read/write access) should always be verified.
  10. The message “The file ….INI could not be opened” appears during the setup. What could be the reason for this?
This message indicates that it is not possible to access PDATA. Please check the PDATA permission setting and User rights to access PDATA.
  11. Is it necessary to create a drive for the image data directory (PDATA) on SIDEXIS stations?
On previous SIDEXIS Version drive letters were necessary. Since Version SIDEXIS XG >1.6 the UNC path is being used, e.g. \MyServer\PDATA. Internally, relative paths are changed to absolute UNC paths.
  12. What’s the easiest way to start a client installation?
Do not start the AutoRun.exe command from the CD; start it from the central setup directory instead, e.g. \MyServer\PDATA\Setup\AutoRun.exe. Select SIDEXIS and confirm the preselected central setup directory. The installation is then completed without any further user interaction.
  13. How can the installation of SIDEXIS XG be further automated with the help of software distribution?
A SIDEXIS XG client installation can be automated with the following command line. Invocation for unsupervised client installation of SIDEXIS XG in the German language: “C:\PDATA\Setup\Autorun.exe“ “C:\PDATA\Setup\SetupMediaC1\wait.htm“
    targets:tgt_dotnetfx2.htm;tgt_mdac.htm;tgt_sidexis_client_1031.htm; tgt_quitapp.htm lcid:1031
“C:\PDATA“ must be replaced by the actual path of the image data directory.
The prerequisite for this is an existing Windows Installer installation >= V 3.1!
  14. Can SIDEXIS XG be installed in a directory other than C:\SIDEXIS?
Yes. An initial installation of SIDEXIS XG can be installed in any random local and writeable directory.
Note: Please make sure that the software components used (especially practice administration software) are compatible with the selected SIDEXIS program directory.
  15. What happens if the same setup is performed several times in succession?
If the SIDEXIS setup is started more than once, the administrative installation dialog box will open. Then you can select the components to be installed/removed with “Edit” and restore the installation files with “Repair”. By the way, you can also perform the same functions via the Windows Control Panel / Software.
Note: This method is not suitable for editing the installation version, i.e. Local/Master/Client.
  16. Are any log files created during the setup and, if so, where can they be found?
The following logfiles are created in the %TEMP% folder during the SIDEXIS installation:
    - Sidexis.log: Installation of SIDEXIS XG
    - Sidexis_config_db.log: Configuration of SQL server for use with SIDEXIS XG
    - Sidexis_NGDBTransfer.log: Transfer of data from previous to new database
An overview of the installation of the SQL Server 2005 Express is recorded in the following file:
    %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Summary.txt
The specified path can be adapted to the actual installation directory if necessary.
NOTE: All relavant Log files can be easily collected (since SIDEXIS XG 2.4) with a tool called NGLogCollect. The tool can be found: SIDEXIS Manager-> NGLogCollect
  17. Why is an installation procedure sometimes automatically initiated when I start SIDEXIS XG?
The installed files are checked before SIDEXIS XG is started. If an error is detected, the setup program restores the required program resources ("self healing").
  18. The SIDEXIS installation program cannot be started via the CD setup command. What could be the reason for this?
The CD setup routine first checks whether an installation is running and waits until it has been terminated, if necessary. On faulty systems, it is also possible that no setup can be started with MSI technology. In this case, the existence of the following key should be checked via regedit.exe:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
If this key is present even though no setup is currently running, the key must be deleted manually.
  19. What should be observed when uninstalling SIDEXIS XG?
The installation data medium is required to uninstall the software. If the installation was started from a CD, you will be prompted to insert the CD in the appropriate drive. If the CD is no longer available, you can also select the installation file “sidexis.msi” from the central setup directory for central installations.
  20. How can defective MSI installations be removed?
Entries can be removed from the Windows installer data base using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (MSIZAP). See description under http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301
  21. Why does a warning on the expired evaluation phase always appear whenever Implant Plus is used?
If a registration number from an earlier version of SIDEXIS XG is specified when installing SIDEXIS XG 1.6x, only a demo version of Implant Plus will be installed.

Database Issues

We recommend using the free tool MS SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) for administration of the SQL server. This tool can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com

  1. How can I transfer my previous data to the new database (SQL Server)?
Start the installation routine on a computer that already has a functional SIDEXIS XG prior to version  V1.6. The SIDEXIS setup routine shows whether the installation is a new one or an update in the bottom left of the window. Make sure that “Update” is displayed when you transfer the data. During the installation, select the new database server to which the previous data should be transferred. The data transfer should then be performed automatically during the installation process. The old Access files are renamed to _OLD*.* and write protected to prevent any inadvertent further use.
In order to import data, the SIDEXIS installation must have functioning access to the database containing the data are to be exported.
  2. Why is it no longer possible for previous SIDEXIS stations with a SW version
As soon as the data has been transferred to the new database, the previous Access database is renamed and write-protected. Any further inadvertent use of the old database is thus prevented.

  3. Can I perform the SQL Server 2005 installation only locally?
Yes. The setup routine of the SQL Server 2005 (Express) does not support remote installation.

  4. Can I use a previously installed SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005/2008 for SIDEXIS XG?
Yes. The procedure for doing this is described in the “SQL Connection Kit“. The SQL Connection Kit is located on the SIDEXIS XG CD (\Tools\SQLConnectionKit ) and  also registered users can obtain this kit by downloading it from www.sidexis.de.

  5. Why is it no longer possible for SIDEXIS to access the database after the computer name is changed?
SIDEXIS uses the computer name for station management. If the station is no longer registered in the database, SIDEXIS cannot access the central data. The station name and the corresponding path to the central data (PDATA) can be edited using the NGStationManager tool. SIDEXIS Manager->NGStationManager

  6. What should I do if the data transfer fails?
If an error is displayed during the data transfer, the data transfer protocol will be displayed (%TEMP%\Sidexis_NGDBTransfer.log) and the installation will be interrupted. A message indicating which data records could be transferred and a debug info on the error which occurred are displayed in this protocol. If the data from the previous database could not be read, a repair must be performed first. A repair tool is available for this purpose in the Tools\DBRepair folder on the SIDEXIS CD.

  7. What role does the language of the operating system play in the installation and configuration of the SQL Server?
During the configuration of the SQL Server via the CD Setup (AutoRun.exe), the collation for the text comparison of the SQL Server is set based on the current user language of the operating system. If the user language required on the SIDEXIS stations has not been set on the server and the language to be used is not based on the Latin alphabet, the setting then must be adapted using the SQL Management Tool, as follows:
    1. Start SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE).
    2. Select and log in SQL Server.
    3. Select database (PDATA_SQLEXPRESS).
    4. Select “Properties” from the context menu.
    5. Choose the collation suitable for the selected language on the “Option” page and confirm with OK.

  8. Why were folders and files of the SQL Server installed under the standard program directory even though a different installation path was specified?
The SQL Server setup program always saves general files to the standard installation directory.

  9. How can the PDATA image data directory subsequently be moved?
The following steps are required to move PDATA:
    1. Terminate SIDEXIS at all stations.
    2. Cancel PDATA enable.
    3. Move PDATA directory to target position.
    4. Create a PDATA enable for the target folder and set the read/write authorizations for the assigned user group.
    5. Start SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE).
    6. Select and log in SQL Server.
    7. Select the “TConfig“ view in the PDATA_SQLEXPRESS database.
    8. Select “Open” from the context menu.
    9. The path must be adapted to the DataPath image data directory for each station.
    10. The master data path for the master station also must be adapted.

  10. How can the data be moved to another SQL Server?
The following steps are required to move the data:
    1. Terminate SIDEXIS at all stations.
    2.  Unshared the PDATA folder
    3. Copy the folder PDATA to the new target position. The target position may be on     the same computer or on another one.
    4. Share the folder PDATA for all users with full access to the files within the folder.
    5. Goto SIDEXIS Manager ->NGStationManager
    6. Enter the new ImageDataPath location for each Station
    7. The Path for the Master-Station (MasterDataPAth) also needs to be entered.
    8. Open SIDEXIS and check if images can be openend w/o problems.
    9. Delete the PDATA folder in the old location.

  11. How can the data be moved to another SQL Server?
The following steps are required to move the SQL Server:

1. Make a Backup of the SQL database with NGSQLBackup.exe. If this tool is not installed yet, you can find it in pdata\setup ool\NGSQLBackup.
2. At the new server use the Sidexis XG CD to install Sidexis XG -> Multistation -> SQL Express and accept the default location. (Do not install SQL Expressr from Microsoft.com or another source.)
3. Perform a restore with NGSQLBackup from the backup you created in the first step. The password is the date Sirona service password.
4. On every computer you will need to change the Data Path in ODBC manager to reflect the new name of the SQL Server computer: Use NGSQLConnect in Sidexis Manager to do this task really easy.
5. Open PDATA\setup\sidexis\setup.ini and adapt the entries to the new server name.
6. Test Sidexis. Open an image; Take an image; Save an Image.
7. Remove PDATA_SQLExpress from original SQL server after testing.

  1. How can I backup the SQL Server with the NGSQLBackup?
    Backup:

    1. Close SIDEXIS at all stations.
    2. Use the NGSQLBackup tool which can be found in PDATA (D: \ PDATA \ Setup \ Tools \ NGSQLBackup). There are 2 versions of the tool depending on your Server (32 or 64bit):
    32 Bit Version: NGSQLBackup.exe
    64bit version: NGSQLBackup64.exe
    3. Copy the appropriate version of the tools in a folder on the SQL database server.
    4. Run either : NGSQLBackup64.exe or NGSQLBackup.exe
    5. Check the settings and then click Backup
    6. After the backup is finished click OK.
    7. Click Close to close the tool
    8. In the folder they are now one. Ini file and a SilentBackup.bat. If they bat file we run a backup performed with the previously defined settings.
    9. It is advisable to periodically perform a backup. For this purpose,s chedule a automatic Windows Scheduled Task and point to the silentbackup.bat to run perodically
    Restore:
    1. Start either NGSQLBackup64.exe  or NGSQLBackup.exe
    2. Check the settings and then click RESTORE
