A milestone for CEREC in orthodontics: Chairside integrated model analysis

With CEREC Ortho 1.2, Dentsply Sirona takes another step towards the digitization of orthodontics – after digital impressions with the CEREC Omnicam, model analysis is now possible right at the CEREC Acquisition Center or the practice PC – a procedure offering time savings and comfort.

Bensheim/Salzburg. A process for absolute technology fans, an idea from another world – that's how many people viewed CEREC when it changed restorative dentistry more than 30 years ago. Since then, digital technologies have come to many areas of dentistry – including orthodontics. Dentsply Sirona, the innovation and technology leader of the dental industry, stepped in to develop workflows that offer an immense added value to orthodontists and dentists who practice orthodontics.

Completely digital – impressions and model analysis

The first milestones along the way have been reached – with CEREC Omnicam, the powder-free intraoral scanner, and the CEREC Ortho software, digital impressions can be used as part of treatment. With the unique guided scanning technique, a digital model of the entire jaw arch can be made in a few minutes.

Now a model analysis can also be carried out on this basis with the CEREC Ortho software 1.2. The Bolton, Moyers, and Nance space analyses are available for this. And this step and the scan itself can be delegated to the dental assistant. The orthodontist can then check this analysis, adjust it if necessary, and then export it for planning orthodontic treatments and producing the required appliances. The software has specially adapted interfaces for this. The orthodontist can thus work together with different service providers, for example dental labs and manufacturers of orthodontic appliances.

The option of installing the special CEREC Ortho software on the practice computer ensures an even simpler workflow. It allows practitioners to perform the analysis and export the data there – the CEREC Omnicam can thus be used again immediately for scans on other patients. This makes the digital process more efficient in dental practices.

Patient comfort – optimal start of treatment

Digitization of different work steps in the orthodontic practice has an important benefit for patients: The digital scan of the jaw with the CEREC Omnicam means that impressions can be made without using an impression tray and material, which is an important factor given the large number of impressions usually needed in orthodontics. CEREC Omnicam’s smallest tip in chairside CAD/CAM means comfortable impressions for the patient.

Treatment can start quickly, as no physical model needs to be made and sent. If a model is needed for producing a conventional appliance, it can be produced on a 3D printer at any time. This also simplifies things for the practitioner – models that are damaged or even broken can easily be printed again, and in addition, much less storage space is needed. The scan also opens up the world of digital case planning.
